d. Use authorized control information symbols in combination with clearance symbols,
abbreviations, location identifiers, and phrase contractions. Do this when recording traffic clearances,
position reports, and instructions on flight progress strips.
(1) Control, clearance, and miscellaneous abbreviations and symbols. Control abbreviations and
symbols are listed in Figure 1-6. The absence of an airway or route number between two fixes in the
flight route indicates "direct"; no symbol or abbreviation is required. Use an "X" to delete a climb-and
maintain or descend-and-maintain arrow, an "at" or "above or below" symbol, a cruise symbol, and
unwanted altitude information. Listed in Figure 1-7 are clearance abbreviations; in Figure 1-8 are
miscellaneous abbreviations.
