Instrument approach procedures are a series of predetermined
maneuvers for the orderly transfer of an aircraft under instrument flight
conditions from the beginning of the initial approach to a landing or to
a point from which a landing may be made visually. They are prescribed
and approved for a specific airport by competent authority.
Turn to the extract from the DOD FLIP (Terminal) Low Altitude,
United States, pages 279 through 310. Like other FLIPs, this publication
gives a list of the abbreviations used (page 281). It has a table of
contents which indexes the instrument approach procedures charts
portrayed (page 282) and a legend (page 284). The legend explains the
plan view symbols and the profile. It also gives the standard format for
portrayal of landing minima on the charts.

The airport diagram, or sketch, is a top view of the airport
showing the runways or helipads and the location of prominent points.
Under the heading "Airport Diagram/Airport Sketch" in the legend
(page 288), review the symbols for reference features.
